FAQ about Intuos4

i1.   Have the Intuos3 pen tablets really been discontinued ?
Yes.  After 4 wonderful years, the Intuos3 has been upgraded to an Intuos4 with new and improved features and benefits.  Therefore, the Intuos3 graphic tablet series has been discontinued. However, the Intuos3 pens - which are also Cintiq pens - will continue to be manufactured due to the Cintiq interactive pen displays

i2.  Can the Intuos3 pens function with the Intuos4 pen tablets ?
No.  All Intuos4 drawing tablets are equipped with new Wacom pen sensor technology, therefore, the Intuos3 pens are not compatible with Intuos4 drawing tablets.

i3When do I get the free bundled software that comes with Intuos4 ?
Register your new Intuos4 graphic tablet with Wacom immediately upon plugging it in.  Then you will be guided, step by step, through the process of downloading your free software.  Please make sure you know exactly what you want before selecting because every decision is final.  You can not go back to change your selection.

i4.  Do the Intuos4 pens work with the Cintiq interactive pen displays ?
No.  Cintiq 12WX interactive pen displays are built with Intuos3 technology, therefore they will only recognize 1.024 levels of pressure sensitiviy and will not function with the Intuos4 digitizer pens.  Similarly, Cintiq 21UX has Intuos4 technology and are not compatible with Intuos3 digitizer pens.

i5.  Will the Intuos4 drawing tablets work with a normal 4:3 standard monitor screen ?
Yes, the Intuos4 graphic tablet works very well with all regular sized monitors. All you need to do is adjust the mapping of the Intuos4 pen tablet's active area to fit your monitor size.

i6  Why are there only 4 sizes of Intuos4 pen tablets when there were 6 different sizes of Intuos3 ?
To simplify purchasing decisions, Wacom chose the 4 most popular sizes. This also minimizes confusion globally.  (With the Intuos3 drawing tablets, almost every continent had a different way of identifying the sizes !)  Furthermore, since the Intuos4 pen tablet series are all in wide format, the display toggle function eliminates the need for an ultra-wide graphic tablet.
i7  Is the working surface of the Intuos4 Wireless exactly the same size as the regular Intuos4 Medium Pen Tablet?
No.  To allow room for the rechargeable lithium-ion battery, the active area of the Intuos4 Wireless measures 40 square inches (8 x 5) compared to 48.5 square inches (8.8 x 5.5) inches for the tethered Intuos4 Medium.

c2.  Do both Wacom Cintiq's have the same pressure sensitivity ?
No.  The smaller Cintiq 12WX offers 1.024 levels of pressure sensitivity, while the larger Cintiq 21UX boasts the highest pressure sensitivity at 2,048 levels.

c3Are there any travel cases for the Cintiq 21UX ?
We haven't seen any in Canada or the USA.  However, we have found one custom-made Cintiq 21UX case on Tablet4U.com.

    c4.  Can I insert CD's in the Cintiq 21UX ?
No.  Both Cintiqs (12WX & 21UX) are monitors only.  You will still need a computer to use these interactive displays.

FAQ about Drawing Tablets

  • D2.  Where are the Wacom Graphire tablets?
Unfortunately, the Graphire graphic tablet has been discontinued (except for the Graphire Bluetooth wireless graphic tablet) by the manufacturer and is unavailable. It has been replaced by the Bamboo graphic tablet series.

  • D3.  I suffer from arthritis. Will a pen tablet help?
For arthritis sufferers, the Intuos4 line of Wacom drawing tablets is preferable because it comes with a Grip Pen - a stylus with a latex-free rubber-padded shaft. This cushioned pen is not only better and more comfortable to hold, but it reduces the gripping tension by as much as 40%!

For many, using a mouse worsens whatever pain they are experiencing (be it in the hand,in the wrist, in the arm or in the shoulder) because of the incessant dragging, constant clicking and the way we grab the tool. We strongly recommend trying a pen tablet. With an Intuos4 graphic tablet, you do get a lot for your money: a top-quality, super-accurate graphic tablet, one comfortable Grip Pen (with extra pen nibs and a pen stand), four bundled software and a 5-button mouse. Many have claimed that after experiencing relief from the daily pain associated with using a computer mouse and the freedom a wireless digitizer pen gives them, they never want to go back to using a mouse again.

  • D4.  Will the Wacom tablet work with all applications?
Yes, the Wacom graphics tablet will work with any application.

  • D5.  Will it take me a long time to learn how to use a pen tablet ?
  • Not at all !  In as little as a few hours,  you will get used to tapping either with a finger or with a pen (depending on which tablet model) instead of clicking.  We suggest playing a few simple computer games to help you get comfortable moving the cursor with a graphic tablet and a digitizer pen.  Then you can personalize or customize the drawing tablet's configurations to best suit the way you would like to work. Adjust the pen tablet's software  to accommodate a light-handed touch or a heavy-handed control.  You can even configure the buttons on the stylus for right-clicking or double-clicking (left-clicking is obtained with a firm but brief tap with the pen tip on the graphic tablet).  Many users have reported that by the second day, they were wondering how they ever managed without a digitizer pen tablet !

It is to be expected that the more features and gadgets a graphic tablet offers, the longer it will take to get to know and be able to easily command all the possible configurations.  But every pen tablet, be it the Bamboo, Graphire, Intuos4 or Cintiq, comes with default settings that will enable you to immediately use the tablet upon plugging it in.

  • D6.  Will my drawing tablet work with both Windows and Mac operating systems?
  • All the pen tablets sold at www.DrawitTablet.com work with either operating system including Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista.

  • D1.  Can I have both the graphic tablet and a mouse connected to my computer?
  • Yes. Having the drawing tablet connected will not affect the functions of the mouse unless the digitizer pen is near the surface of the tablet.

  • D7.  What is meant by the "input surface area" of a Wacom tablet ?
  • The input surface area of Wacom drawing tablets refers to the actual drawing area or touching area which will respond to finger input and / or power the digitizer pen or mouse.  The dimensions given almost always describes the input surface area (or active drawing area) of the pen tablet.  The actual total size or the footprint of the graphic tablet can be as much as 4 to 5 inches larger than the input area. For example, a  Wacom Intuos4 Small graphic tablet  has a total footprint area of 12.2 x 8.2 x 0.5 in. but an active drawing area (input area) of 6.2 x 3.9  inches.  Keep this in mind when choosing a graphic tablet to make sure you allow enough desktop space for your new computer input device.

  • D8.  Do you you know why the Cintiq 20WSX was discontinued?
A critical component, (found only in the Cintiq 20WSX), was discontinued by the manufacturer. Therefore, WACOM was forced to discontinue the Cintiq 20WSX.

  • D9.  Why is the surface of my Wacom tablet lifting?

The surface of a Wacom pen tablet is designed to lift so that it can be replaced if it becomes scratched or worn. With proper care and maintenance, the graphic tablet's surface should not need replacing for a minimum of 5-6 years.

  • D10.  Do all digiter pens work with all drawing tablets ?
No.  Bamboo digitizer pens work only with Bamboo drawing tablets.
Graphire tablet pens are only compatible with the Graphire series of graphic tablets.
Intuos3 digitizer pens can only be used on every Intuos3 graphic tablet as well as on every Cintiq interactive pen display.
Intuos4 digitizer pens only function with Intuos4 drawing tablets.

FAQ about Wacom graphic tablet products

A1- What if I'm not an artist?

Don't worry! Wacom has a recent line of graphic tablet specifically designed for general consumers: the Bamboo line offers the basic models for basic home or office use, plus more comprehensive Bamboo models  for creative users, aspiring artists and hobby photographers.

A2- Are Wacom ink pens being discontinued ?

Wacom is slowly discontinuing all ink pens EXCEPT for the Intuos3 ink pen. The new Intuos4 graphic tablet series will also have Inking pens as an optional accessory.

A3- Why does my stylus behave like a mouse?

The driver process has been interrupted or halted for some reason. A simple reboot should correct the situation. If this does not correct the problem e-mail us at contactus@drawittablet.com for further instructions.

A4- Are there more pen tablets other than Wacom?

Yes, quite a few. However, always be very careful with other brands. No-name brands grossly lack in accuracy and precision, and some have tethered pens which truly limits freedom of movement. Some other brands like Adesso, Aiptek, DigiPro, Genius, Pablo, Trust, UC Logic, ... are a little less expensive than Wacom's newest line of drawing tablets (Intuos4), BUT they do not have battery-free pens. This means that the pens are heavier and thicker plus you will always need to replace batteries which can prove to be very inconvenient and expensive in the long run.

With less-expensive drawing tablets, unfortunately, you often get what you pay for: lagging problems, jittery controls, lack of precision and inconsistent lines, many pressure sensitivity issues, quirks in mapping the monitor to the tablet, pen freezing up, erratic pen performances, poor construction, software/driver errors, unreliable and unpredictable results, incompatibility with Windows or Mac, unprofessional quality, not user-friendly and unavailable customer support.

With Wacom, the leader and the frequent award-winner in the graphic tablet field, you get up-to-date technology, top quality products and performance, driver up-dates, great technical support, many software features, additional software discounts (for registered users), and unsurpassed longevity. Wacom is truly a hard act to follow.

While it is perfectly understandable to want to save pocket change by purchasing a cheaper graphic tablet, many people get burned doing so. Why not invest in a sure thing? It can prove to be cheaper in the long run. Wacom drawing tablets are certainly a worthwhile investment (and to many, it has become an essential tool) if you spend long hours, on a daily basis, working with a computer.

A5- Why are Wacom drawing tablets more expensive?

Compared to video game consoles, Wacom darwing tablets are actually quite reasonably priced and unlike video game consoles, drawing tablets can be tax deductible if used for business or education purposes.

Compared to other graphic tablet brands, Wacom is the only one which offers the unique combination of cordless AND battery-free pens, airbrushes and mice. Thanks to Wacom's Patented Penabled Technology, the graphic tablet powers the digitizer pen (airbrush or mouse) by electromagnetic resonance. This allows more freedom of movement, accuracy, precision and easier handling while being maintenance-free all of which other drawing tablets cannot offer.

No one else makes drawing tablets like Wacom where the accuracy, precision, performance and durability frequently out-match the competitors.

Designed for basic office use and budding artists, the Bamboo drawing tablets are the least expensive of Wacom drawing tablets and are geared to the general public and travelers.

A6- Will it be difficult to learn how to use a graphic tablet?

Absolutely not. In no time at all (for some, in as little as a few hours), you'll be wondering how you ever managed to work without one.

Furthermore, Wacom drawing tablets are a snap to set up - all you have to do is plug and play. That is, plug in the pen tablet, start up your computer, and you're ready to play. For more features, insert the CD-ROM and install the drivers.

A7- If I use it to draw, will I still be able to keep my style or will it be completely different ?

You will be able to keep your drawing style, but you will be doing it faster, easier and with better results with astounding precision and accuracy.

A8- What in the world is a graphic tablet and what does it do?

A graphic tablet is a computer input device which can totally replace the mouse, or if you wish, work in conjunction with your computer mouse. Drawing tablets or touch tablets are an alternate way of controlling or moving your cursor on the monitor screen, so they can do everything that a mouse can do and more.

A9- What's the big deal about using a pen instead of a mouse ?

Here are some of the reasons why a Wacom stylus is mightier than a mouse:
Accuracy: The tracking ball in a mouse was really designed for drawing straight lines and angles, not for drawing circles, or shading small areas, or any detailed work involving precision and accuracy.

On the other hand, a pressure sensitive pen (which you can set to your own preferences) is much more responsive than a mouse, and allows you to precisely manipulate digital tools and perform computer tasks (like photo editing or graphic design) easily, quickly and accurately with pixel-perfect precision.

Speed: With a mouse, you always have to search for the cursor. With a pen tablet, the cursor is always at the exact spot on the screen relative to the point touched on the graphic tablet.
Most Wacom digitizer pens come with an eraser at one end. It can be used for erasing or highlighting and is as pressure sensitive as the writing tip. On the side of the stylus is a dual button that allows you to click the same way as you would a mouse. You can even toggle between functions on your screen. The eraser and the toggle switch have been proven to be time saving and helpful tools, because they eliminate the hassle of finding tool-bar menus and switching devices.
Freedom: Wireless and battery-free, all Wacom digitizer pens give you true untethered and light-weight freedom of movement. Battery-free, in my book, is also equivalent to maintenance-free, worry-free and eco-friendly.

Health: When using a mouse, there is repetitive use of certain muscles while the hand and forearm are forced in unnatural positions, causing tension and strains in the long run. When holding a pen, the hand, fingers and arm remain in a more natural and comfortable state. A larger group of muscles are being used intermittently, thus considerably reducing any muscular stress and fatigue. Basically, working with a pen and a tablet cuts down the risk of suffering from the dreaded Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) commonly called the Mouse Syndrome.

Granted, some people cannot tear away from their beloved mouse. That is why some Wacom drawing tablets come with a cordless, battery-less, ball-free and laser-free mouse, thus giving customers the choice to switch between the stylus and the mouse. It's interesting to note that approximately 48% of graphic tablet users never go back to using a mouse again.
